According to recent rumors from trusted sources, the iPhone 17 models will likely have an upgraded 24 MP front sensor. The rumors also suggest that all three iPhone 17 Pro Max rear cameras will have 48 MP sensors.
There are reports of one more upgrade. This year’s upgrade to the 5x telephoto camera sensor will also come to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models.
The iPhone 16 Pro models come with this camera setup:
- Main camera: 48 MP
- Ultrawide: 48 MP (upgraded from 12 MP in the iPhone 15 Pro)
- Telephoto lens: 12 MP
- Selfie camera: 12 MP
More than a year ago, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned supply-chain sources to upgrade the selfie camera in the upcoming iPhone 17 models.
Here’s an excerpt from his blog:
The front camera of the iPhone 17 will be upgraded to a 24MP/6P lens (vs. the 12MP/5P lens of iPhone 15 & 16), which will significantly improve the image quality. Genius is the primary lens supplier for iPhone front cameras.

What to Expect?
Earlier rumors suggested that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have a 48-megapixel periscope telephoto sensor and a 24-megapixel selfie shooter. However, the Chinese leaker “Digital Chat Station” endorses both reports, but indicates that both iPhone 17 Pro models will get a new telephoto sensor, not just the Pro Max.
The specifications are 48MP 1/1.3 “, ultra-wide angle 48MP, periscope 48MP 5X, main camera and telephoto are GP glass plastic lenses, and the front camera is upgraded to 24MP.
This leak suggests that both the Pro models will be equipped with a 48MP sensor for all 3 rear cameras. Digital Chat Station has historical credibility when it comes to information related to iPhone camera upgrades. They were the first source to post about iPhone 16 Pro models coming out with a larger sensor for the main camera last year.
